Put The Phone Down, Here’s How

Okay it’s 2017 and there’s no denying, smart phones are one of the greatest inventions ever. I would be a hypocrite if I told you to put away your mobile phone forever and go back to the stone ages of house phones and dial-up. There’s also no denying some of the negative impact constant smart phone use has had on our society. The constant connection to the whole rest of the world at all times day or night, it might be causing you more stress than you think. Smart phone usage is linked to less productivity, lower self-esteem, and higher stress levels. If you have ever read GUADS, then you know how stress can wreak havoc on your body. Try some of these simply ways to put the phone down, and get back to life.

Put The Phone Down At Meal Times

Distracted eating can lead to a lot of bad outcomes, and no I’m not just talking about choking when you see your crush’s FB status switch to single. It can lead to over eating, weight gain, depression… all things we are probably all trying to avoid. Make a rule that you put the phone down at meal times. Still seem too hard? Try setting a rule with friends that when you go out to eat, all the phones go in the middle of the table. If someone grabs their phone before the checks come, they have to pay for everyone’s meal!

Put The Phone Down and Pick Up A Book

Yup, a real, made out of paper, book. Don’t read on your tablet or phone. Take 30 minutes to sit outside in the sun with a great book, or newspaper, or magazine. See if you can read the whole time without checking your phone for notifications.

Put The Phone Down and Sweat

Thats right, go workout without your phone! I know, some of you are thinking, how will I listen to music? Most smart phones these days have a do not disturb setting, turn it on before starting your sweat sesh. Another idea, take a yoga or spin class at your local gym, most classes have a no phone policy, so you will have no choice but to leave it behind and spend 60 minutes of your day focusing on you.

Put The Phone Down And Go Old School

And by old school I mean, buy an alarm clock! How many of you use your phone as your alarm? (I’m guilty myself). If you go out and purchase an alarm clock, you are no longer forced to have your phone screen be the first thing you see when you open your eyes. 12 emails, 3 texts, and 5 social media notifications, what a way to start the morning?! Try an alarm clock and actually enjoy your morning, drink your coffee, breathe.
