Your Guide to the Perfect Smoothie Bowl

I don’t know what it is, but something is so satisfying eating a smoothie with a spoon. Maybe it’s more visually appealing and makes me want to take pictures or maybe it just helps me eat it quicker when I’m hungry. Either way, smoothies are a great healthy anytime-meal option, especially for hot summer days. And you can take them anywhere on the go. Here is a foolproof guide to making Instagram-worthy bowls!

It’s All in the Texture

It’s less appetizing when you have a smoothie that’s more runny than creamy. The best way to thicken it up is by choosing some type of frozen fruit base. Start with 2 different fruits and make one of them frozen. My personal favorite is a frozen banana and whatever other fruit I have on hand. Feel free to add ice too for more density and coldness.

Sneak in Some Veggies

We all know it: eat more vegetables. Smoothies are a great way to pack in a serving or two more and you won’t even be able to taste it with all the sweetness of the fruit. My go to’s are spinach, kale, and swiss chard. I even like to add avocado and zucchini for some extra creaminess.

Liquids

Don’t forget adding something like water, almond or coconut milk, or coconut water (great for some extra hydration!) to help the mixture blend well.

Protein

This is what is going to keep you feeling satisfied for hours. Experiment with things like nut butters, greek yogurt, cottage cheese, or silken tofu.

Topping Time

After you’ve blended everything and poured it into a pretty bowl, it’s time to get creative! Anything goes for this final step. I like chia seeds, coconut flakes, granola, cinnamon, almonds…the options are endless! So don’t be afraid to try a bunch of crazy combos and find what is most delicious to you!
