Ever feel like there’s a giant wall standing between you and where you want to be? It’s like there is this giant road block that says, “Wrong way! Turn back!” These road blocks prevent us from being who we want to be. They prevent us from achieving our goals, as big or small as they may be. The ultimate question is how do we avoid those road blocks? How do we plow through them, jump over them ,or find an alternate route? What’s holding us back?
Road Block #1: Fear
I’m afraid of failure. If I take that chance, if I make a change, what if I fall flat on my face? What if I mess up? What if I make a fool of myself? Thoughts like those swirl around in my head, teasing me and taunting me.
Road Block #1 Detour:
Road Block #2: You Don’t Have a Map
Sometimes I want to make a change, but don’t know where or how to begin. I know what I want to achieve, but how in the world do I get there?
Road Block #2 Detour:
It’s okay to ask for directions when you’re lost! For example, want to get in shape? Hire a personal trainer, do research online, pick up some fitness magazines, go to fitness classes, or ask a friend who is an avid gym-goer. Asking for help doesn’t make you “stupid”, it makes you successful.
Road Block #3: Change
Some people love change and some people run from it. I am in the latter group. Change is hard. Breaking from our routines can be rough, especially when those routines are ingrained into our lives and daily routines.
Road Block #3 Detour:
Get out a piece of paper and make two lists. First, write down all of the possible benefits that could come from a change. When that list is completed, make a list of what could happen if you don’t make the change. Take a good look at both lists. Do the benefits outweigh the risks? Then you are ready to take the plunge.
