How late can I eat before bed without gaining weight?

To successfully loss weight, you'll need to stop eating two - three hours before going to bed. You should not feel starving before bed but you should feel slightly hungry. When you're trying to lose weight, slipping into bed at night feeling slightly hungry is actually a good thing. It's your body telling you that what you did that day is working -- you're losing body fat. If you don't feel this way, you're probably not losing fat.

Now lets say you follow your brain's directive and eat close to bedtime, your body will not dip into the fat it has stored away, and will probably even store some more. Every time you eat, your metabolism increases slightly. But this effect is lost or minimized late at night. You don't get the same metabolism-boosting benefit when you eat just before bed, because a couple of hours after dinner, your body begins preparing for sleep. This natural slackening of your metabolic rate overrides any metabolic boost you might get from eating. So once you hit the pillow, the only calories you're going to use are the basic calories you need to keep your heart beating and your lungs breathing and allow your eyes to move in REM sleep. This is only a minimal number of calories.

Believe it or not, eating late at night can also inhibit your calorie-burning potential the next day. Say, for instance, that you treat yourself to a sandwich and some fat free chips at 9.:30 P.M. one night and are fast asleep by 10:30. When your alarm goes off the next morning at eight, the last thing on your mind is going to be breakfast -- you're still full from the sandwich and fat free chips you ate the night before. Chances are, you're going to skip breakfast and lose all the metabolism-boosting benefits you'd get from eating a morning meal.

Here are a few simple tips to make sure you get the most from your last meal of the day:

• Eat about 3 hours before going to bed - you'll have some time to burn off calories but you probably won't get too hungry before going to sleep

• Eat frequently throughout the day - small, healthy meals and snacks spaced about 3 hours apart - to minimize hunger cravings at night

• Your last meal should consist mainly of a lean protein (like baked chicken breast) and low-calorie, fibrous carbohydrates (veggies and fruits) - avoid all starchy carbs close to bedtime (breads, pastas, rice, potatoes, etc.)

• If, like many of us, you get big-time carb cravings right before bed.....eat some carbs! Just make sure they're the high-fiber, low-glycemic kind: apples, berries, peaches, plums, bran cereal, fresh vegetables, vegetable juice, etc.

• If you're currently strength training to build muscle, a great end-of-the-day meal option is low-fat cottage cheese (full of slowly-digested casein protein) with no-sugar-added fresh or canned fruit.

Can drinking red wine or grape juice really help you?

Red wine, in moderation, has long been thought of as heart healthy. The alcohol and certain substances in red wine called antioxidants may help prevent heart disease by increasing levels of "good" cholesterol and protecting against artery damage. While the news about red wine might sound great if you enjoy a glass of red wine with your evening meal, doctors are wary of encouraging anyone to start drinking alcohol. That's because too much alcohol can have many harmful effects on your body. Still, many doctors agree that something in red wine appears to help your heart. It's possible that antioxidants, such as flavonoids or a substance called resveratrol, have heart-healthy benefits.

BOXING!

Are organic foods more effective at promoting healthy hearts than non-organic food?

The fact is, there is not conclusive evidence that organically grown produce is higher in nutrients than non-organic. However, we do know that nutrients degrade over time, through exposure to light and oxygen, so old produce is likely not as nutritious as fresh. Also, not everyone has access to these types of foods.

I thought all fruits and veggies were important - why do I need to pay attention to purple?

All fruits and vegetables are important, and most Americans aren’t getting enough in their diets. It’s also important to get a variety of produce, from a wide range of colors since the vitamin, minerals and plant nutrients found in each fruit and vegetable can vary widely. In particular people are falling short on getting enough purple fruits and vegetables, which accounts for only 3% of total fruit and vegetable intake. According to a national survey, drinking and eating purple and blue fruits and vegetables is associated with healthier eating patterns in children and adults, and overall better health in adults.

Are hot dogs healthy?

Unfortunately, as much as we all love hot dogs, they are not necessarily good for you. They are low in nutrition value and high in salt, which is linked to hypertension and heart disease. During the cooking process, nitrates are added as preservatives to help keep the hot dog fresh looking. Nitrates, also found in other processed meats such as sausage, bacon, and deli meat, have been linked to certain types of cancer.

Although hot dogs are certainly not healthy, neither are they toxic if eaten in moderation. The American Cancer society states, "It is not necessary to eliminate consumption of processed meat; rather the message is that these foods should not be the mainstay of your diet.” Telling people to stop eating hot dogs is unrealistic, but keep your processed meat consumption in moderation and you should be fine.

Is it possible to selectively train your lower abdominal muscles?

Based on electromyographic (EMG) activity recorded during the performance of various abdominal exercises (e.g., crunches, reverse curls, leg lifts), individuals generally appear unable to differentially recruit the "upper" and "lower" abdominal muscles. In other words, individuals cannot trigger a contraction in one specific area of the abdominal muscles (either the upper or lower abs). Despite the common misconception among many fitness professionals and exercise enthusiasts, EMG data suggest that the upper and lower rectus abdominis act as a continuous sheath (i.e., one large muscle group). Contributing to the confusion is the fact that during certain abdominal exercises (e.g., leg lifts or other "hip flexor" exercises), individuals experience localized muscle fatigue and discomfort in the lower abdominal region. This situation occurs because the primary muscle used in hip flexion, the iliopsoas, originates deep below the lower portion of the rectus abdominis. The key point to keep in mind is that the phenomenon of local muscle fatigue and discomfort should not be misinterpreted as specific recruitment of "lower" abdominal muscles.

Do stress balls help?

They really do work. In fact, they work very well! They are portable, cheap, safe, easy to use and fun. Whenever you make a fist, you create muscle tension and when you release your grip, your muscles relax. This process of acute muscle tension and relaxation can flush out muscle tension and relieve stress.

These palm-sized balls come in different shapes and sizes filled with high density foam, soft rubber, or squeezable polyurethane. If you had a hard day at work, stress balls can help you have a soothing effect, foster relaxation, and it will assist you in recapturing energy that was lost throughout your hectic day.
