A hotel gym runs the gauntlet of looks. It can be in some cases phenomenal with everything you could ever want. While other times it has nothing or half of what they have is broken an inoperable. Regardless of how good or bad the hotel gym equipment is there is always a way to get a good workout in. I know first hand as over the summer I travel all over to work and have seen all types of gyms. Regardless I was able to get a good workout in. The key is to work with what you have and if all else fails find a gym with a cheap day pass.
First thing when you get there always check out the gym to assess what you have and give you some time to think of options. There is nothing worse than getting to the gym and having no idea what to do because you just saw what they had. So make sure to take the time and figure out what you have so you are not lost when you get there.
Your average hotel gym will generally have some dumbbells. The downside to this is that they generally go up to 50 lbs. That is ok though. You can work with that. If you decide to lift just do a lot more reps than you normally would so you still get that good burn. Also with these use compound exercises that will work multiple muscle groups together.
If all the have is cardio equipment combine the cardio equipment with bodyweight moves like squats or burpees. Do some form of sprints on the cardio equipment then hop off and do 20 bodyweight exercises. The key is to keep your heart rate up and to keep moving.
If all else fails and there is nothing there there are two options. Go ahead and go for a jog outside starting and ending with some burpees. Or just find a local gym with a free or cheap day pass and go workout there.
Hopefully these tips will be able to help you have a more effective workout when you are on the road traveling.
