Common Ways Stress Effects Your Mind, Body, & Behavior

Whether it short-term annoyances like getting stuck in traffic or trying to sort through the emotional process of a major life event like divorce or losing a job, stress is a part of all of our every day lives. Stress is a highly personal experience. One person’s stressful situation might be another person’s exciting adventure. It all depends on how you respond and react to stress. According to the CDC, chronic stress is actually linked to several chronic diseases such as obesity, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and cancer. One way to recognize and combat harmful stress is to identify common ways stress effects your mind, body, and behavior.

  • Anxiety
  • Restlessness
  • Lack of motivation or focus
  • Feeling overwhelmed
  • Irritability or anger
  • Sadness or depression
  • Short-circuited

  • Headache
  • Muscle tension or pain
  • Chest pain
  • Fatigue
  • Change in libido
  • Stomach upset (GI problems)
  • Sleep problems
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Skin irritations such as rashes or hives

  • Overeating or undereating
  • Angry outbursts
  • Drug or alcohol abuse
  • Tobacco use
  • Social withdrawal
  • Exercising less often
  • Loss of interest in daily activities

I can’t stress this enough (LOL)… these are common symptoms of stress. However, every body reacts to stress differently. If you are finding that you experience many of these symptoms of a daily basis, make sure you find ways to handle stressful situations in life.
