Things To Do
Ways For Kids to be Active for Little or No Money
- Grab your skateboard and head out for a ride
- Get a game of hopscotch going: Find some chalk, draw the board, and then hop away!!
- Jump rope- Challenge yourself! See how long you can keep jumping without stopping the rope.
- Ride your scooter-Know a big hill that is hard to get up? If you can get to the top think how fun the coming down will be!!!
- Ride your bike- Head out for your own neighborhood adventure. See what everyone else is up to!
- Roller blade- Try substituting blading for places you would normally walk to
- Trampoline- how high can you jump???
- Walk your dog- Not only will you be active, but Fluffy will appreciate the attention too!!
- Don't have anyone around to get a soccer game going? Doesn't mean you can't grab your soccer ball head to your yard and practice your skills and kick the ball around. Set up a goal to practice with. Next time the gang is around you can surprise them with your skills!
- Dance- Crank up your favorite tunes and let loose in your living room!
- Karate/ Martial arts- If you have got the skills it is always important to practice
- Gardening/ yard work- Ask your parents if you can build your own garden. With their help you can watch your activity level bloom!!
- Work on your golf game practice putting in your yard
- Always wanted to be a cheerleader?? Make up your own cheers and dance routines!
ATTENTION!!! ATTENTION!!!
- These next two activities are sure to please your parents so if want to make them happy and be active, too, these are for you!!
- Help your parents clean the house- might not be your favorite thing to do but think of the points you are gaining with them. Next time you want to do something you are definitely in!!
- Clean your own room- put those piles of toys and clothes away. It would be nice to have a clean room anyway the next time a friend comes over, right?
What kids can do with friends?
- Got a pool or a friend with one? Have a pool party- get all your friends together to swim and enjoy an afternoon in the sun
- Get a game of soccer going with all the neighborhood kids
- Work on your skateboard tricks with friends- don't forget your helmet and knee and elbow pads!!
- Hit the playground with the gang and see which one of you can make it across the monkey bars the fastest
- Grab your surfboards and hit the waves!!
- Have a hopscotch tournament and see who is at the top of their game!
- Try double-dutch instead of regular jump roping
- Make a scooter club- Plan trips to people's houses and neighborhood places a couple times a week
- Play Frisbee at the beach or at the park
- Head up and down the beach looking for that perfect shell
- Have a competition with friends to see who takes the most steps in one day- Pick a Saturday, count your own steps and see who has the most- Don't lose count!!
- Make a trip to the local fishing hole
- Ride your bikes
- Roller blade in the local park
- Play Hide and seek
- Pretend you are Olympic stars- develop trampoline routines and give each other scores
- Play Kickball
- Tennis Anyone???
- Take some batting practice so all your friends are ready for the next big baseball game
- Try a pick up game of basketball at the local outdoor court
- Play freeze tag: Have 1 person be "it" and one area that is home base, if the "it" person touches you then you are frozen until you get touched by another player, home base is a safety zone to rest and if you are frozen 3 times then you become "it"
- Walk places instead of driving
- Do a group dog walk- get your friends and their pooches together to go for a walk
- Play Handball
- Get a good pillow fight going- not only will you break a sweat but you might be able to get out some stress
- Squash cans/ recycling: Good for you and good for the earth!
- Dance Party!! Have everyone bust out their favorite move then teach it to the rest of the group
- Play Touch football
- Play 4 square
- Play Dodge ball (but don't get too extreme on your friends!!)
- Develop cheers and dance routines
- Have a car wash for all your neighbors- Charge a little bit of money per car and now you are active and making some cash!!
- Practice your lacrosse stick handling skills and play some catch with a friend
- Get a game of water polo going at the community pool
- Pretend you are professional wrestlers- Figure out what your names would be and then practice a few moves on each other- But don't get too mean here, remember your opponent is still your friend
- Play paintball- This will cost some cash, but maybe for a special occasion mom and dad will shell out the dough
Ideas for warm weather
- Hit the pool!!
- Got to love soccer in the sunshine!
- Skateboard
- Go to the playground and see how high you can swing or how fast you can get across the monkey bars
- Which way to the beach??? Surf, swim, Frisbee, walk along the water to look for shells, build sand castles. You can't go wrong!!!

- Get out the Slip-n-Slide
- Hide-n-seek in the dark- Wait until dusk hits to play to add an element of scariness to the game!

- Practice your pitching technique so you can wow the fans next baseball season
- Hoop it up! Practice your foul shot and those trick shots that will give you the edge in your next game of PIG
- Play chase in your yard- someone is "it" then everyone else just start running from there!
- Take the dog for a walk - But make sure if it's really warm you have water for you and the dog too!
- Play Handball
- Help your parents by mowing the lawn
- Get your parents car nice and shiny by giving it a good wash
Ideas for cold weather
- You don't just have to sled on snow- Sometimes leaves work just as well!
- Rake leaves into big piles perfectly suited for jumping in to- you might have to rake them again later but who could stand missing out on that kind of fun??
- Play tag
- Build an entire snowman family modeled after your own
- Go sledding
- Hit the slopes
- Divide into 2 teams, find your barricades, build your snowballs and have a snowball fight
- Make angels in the snow
- Build a fort indoors with sheets and chairs and maybe even your mom's dining room table if she will let you
- Go trick or treating: See who can get to the most houses in 1 hour
- Extreme Christmas Caroling: Carol at one house then run to your next destination- you may have to take a minute to catch your breath before you can start singing!!
- Help to decorate your house for the holidays
Ideas for rainy and snowy days
- Build a fort inside- Be creative and pretend you are hiding out from some bandit out-laws trying to track you down
- Give an exercise tape a try
- Have a ping-pong tournament with all your friends to see who the king of the rec room is!!
- If the day is yucky outside use it as motivation to get chores done like cleaning your room or helping your parents clean the house
- Indoor Hide-n-seek- Take the challenge to see who can find the best spot to hide in the house
- Play in the rain- Head out and jump in some puddles
