What do I do if I am Lactose Intolerant?

Even though dairy is very important, lactose intolerance is common among many Americans. Lactose intolerance results from the body's inability to digest the milk sugar, lactose. It is possible to have varying degrees of lactose intolerance. Symptoms of lactose intolerance may include: cramps, bloating, gas, diarrhea and nausea. If you experience any of these symptoms after eating dairy, consult with a physician for a proper evaluation and correct management. If you are diagnosed with lactose intolerance, there are simple ways to manage your condition while getting the dairy that you need. Here are some helpful tips:

  • Drink milk in smaller servings
  • Try hard cheeses that are lower in lactose, like cheddar
  • Drink milk with a meal or other food
  • Eat yogurt with active cultures
  • Substitute regular dairy products with ones that are lactose-reduced (i.e. cottage cheese, yogurt, ice cream and nonfat, low fat and calcium fortified milk)
  • Take lactase enzyme tablets before eating or with dairy products
  • Add lactase enzyme drops to regular milk
